The Ultimate Gym Bag Checklist

Walking into the gym with a half-packed bag is its own special kind of annoying — forgotten deodorant, shoes that don’t fit right, socks that slide down mid-set. After a lot of trial and error (and a few wasted purchases along the way), here’s exactly what’s in my gym bag and why each item earned its spot.

The Bag Itself

Everyday pick: Adidas Defender 5 Backpack — under $50 Simple, spacious, and doesn’t try to be more than it needs to be. Plenty of separate sections for shoes and dirty clothes, which keeps everything from turning into one sweaty pile by the end of your workout.

For office-to-gym days: Aer Fit Pack 3 — ~$150 This one’s pricier, but it earns it. Sleek and professional enough to double as an actual work bag, with a padded laptop sleeve and a ventilated shoe compartment. If you’re heading straight from the office to the gym (or traveling), this bag handles both without missing a beat.

Hydration

YETI Rambler 18oz Bottle with Chug Cap — ~$32 Vacuum-insulated stainless steel, BPA-free, and dishwasher safe. The small detail that sold me: the cap screws right onto the mouthpiece to keep it clean between sips. Comes in a ton of colors and fits in most cup holders — small thing, but genuinely convenient.

Hygiene

Dr. Squatch Natural Deodorant — $10-14 Scores well on Yuka if that matters to you, and it actually works. Yes, it’s pricier than drugstore deodorant, but you’re paying for quality and natural ingredients. Go for the invisible glide or spray versions specifically — a lot of natural deodorants use coconut oil, which can leave stains on t-shirts. These don’t.

Old Navy Flip Flops — under $5 Don’t overthink this one. Save your money for the stuff that’s actually worth spending on — these just need to survive a gym shower.

What to Wear

Lululemon Pace Breaker Lined Short 7″ — $78 Covers you for both strength and cardio days. Comes in multiple colors and lengths depending on preference, holds up well wash after wash, and — worth mentioning if you’ve struggled with this — one of the better options I’ve found for guys with larger quads.

Vuori Strato Tech Tee — $58 Pricier than a basic tee, but you’ll get your money’s worth. Moisture-wicking, comfortable, and versatile enough that I wear it well beyond just the gym.

Tommy John Second Skin Mid-Length Boxer Brief 6″ — $40 I’ve tried a lot of brands over the years — this is the one I kept coming back to, and now it’s the only brand I buy. Tagless, soft, moisture-wicking, breathable, and it doesn’t ride up, even for guys with larger legs. Go for the hammock pouch option for extra comfort. Not marketed specifically as “gym underwear,” but it holds up completely for workouts and everyday wear alike.

Quince Everyday Cotton Solid Ankle Socks — $25 Breathable, comfortable, and durable — nothing flashy needed here, just socks that do their job well.

Footwear

ASICS Gel Kayano 33 — $170 A stability shoe I keep coming back to. Not bulky, extremely comfortable, and versatile enough that I wear them everywhere — I genuinely miss them when I put on anything else.

Tech

AirPods Pro 3 — $250 Great noise cancellation, stays in place through a workout, and the sound quality holds up whether you’re lifting or running.
